The Sutherland Astronomical Society Practical Astronomy Course (or SASPAC) is held annually at the Green Point Observatory and runs on Wednesday evenings for 9 weekly sessions. Recommended for adults, teens and gifted sub-teens who wish to expand their knowledge of the cosmos.

The material covered in this course will engage both beginner and experienced astronomer alike, and no prior knowledge of astronomy is required.

Session dates for 2014 are 3rd Sept, 10th Sept, 17th Sept, 8th Oct, 15th Oct, 22nd Oct, 29th Oct, 5th Nov and 12 Nov.

Each session starts at 7:30pm and continues for approximately 2 hours (registration on Week 1 begins 30 minutes earlier at 7pm).

Each course will cover the following program (subject to change):

  • Introduction to Practical Astronomy
  • The Inner Solar System
  • The Outer Solar System
  • Telescopes and Optics
  • Constellations, Catalogues and Atlases
  • Anatomy of Stars
  • Deep Sky Observing
  • Cosmology
  • Where To From Here?

Participants are also invited to attend a number of SASI dark sky observing sessions during the course.

The cost of the course is $130 (inc GST), which includes full attendance at lectures, weekly night sky viewing (weather permitting), supper, a SASI 50th Anniversary coffee mug, free astronomical software and certificate on completion of the course.
