CATEGORIES:Guest Speaker Night
CREATED:20240414T131121
SUMMARY:Guest Speaker - Dr Tayyaba Zafar - Macquarie University
LOCATION:: Teams Online
DESCRIPTION:
Australia's Next Frontier: MANIFEST at the Giant Magellan Telescope

MANIFEST (Many-Instrument Fiber System) will be one of the groundbreaki
ng instrument on the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT), empowering astronomers
to study the universe in incredible detail. This advanced fiber-optic posi
tioning system allows the GMT to connect with multiple instruments and capt
ure light from multiple objects simultaneously across the vast field of vie
w of the GMT. For Australian astronomy, MANIFEST opens new opportunities to
explore distant galaxies and stars with unmatched precision and resolution
. This talk will delve into how MANIFEST works and what it means for discov
eries in cosmology, stellar evolution, and our quest to understand the gala
xy evolution. Join us to learn about the next giant leap in observational a
stronomy and the exciting role Australia will play in it!

<

ba Zafar

Dr. Tayyaba Zafar is a Senior Lecturer in Astrophysics at M
acquarie University, where she specialises in cosmic dust and its role in t
he universe. She holds memberships in the Australian Academy of Science’s N
ational Committee for Astronomy and the AAL Science Advisory Committee. Ren
owned for her contributions to astronomy instrumentation, Dr. Zafar collabo
rates on cutting-edge tools advancing observational capabilities. A passion
ate advocate for equity in STEM, Dr Zafar is the Chair of the ARC Center of
Excellence ASTRO3D EDI committee and member of the Astronomical Society of
Australia IDEA Chapter Steering Committee. Dr. Zafar is a 2020 Tall Poppy
Science Award recipient and an alumna of the Homeward Bound leadership prog
