SUMMARY:Guest Speaker - Dr Lee Spitler - Macquarie University
LOCATION:Green Point Observatory
DESCRIPTION:The Huntsman TelescopeIn this talk I give an update about the Huntsman Tele
scope (https://www.mq.edu.au/about/about-the-university/faculties-and-depar
tments/faculty-of-science-and-engineering/departments-and-centres/departmen
t-of-physics-and-astronomy/facilities/huntsman-telescope), a new astronomy
observing system that makes use of an array of Canon lenses to take images
of extremely faint astronomical sources. I'll describe the science motivati
on, show preliminary data and give an update on how the commissioning of th
e system at Siding Spring Observatory. I will also discuss ambitious plans
to launch a small satellite into space and perform similar observations at
infrared wavelengths of light.\nDr Lee SpitlerSenior Lecturer in Astronomy
and Astrophysics, Macquarie UniversityMy research aims to improve our under
standing of how galaxies form and evolve through cosmic times. Galaxies hos
t all the really interesting things about the universe -- stars, dust, life
, etc -- so their study can tell us a lot about the universe we live in.\nI
am also pursuing creative ways to view the universe using new technology.
This started with my efforts to set up the Huntsman Telescope (http://www.g
oogle.com/url?q=http%3A%2F%2Fhuntsman.space%2F&sa=D&sntz=1&usg=
AFQjCNF6glPtjbURS38curn0-zBzlorgcQ), a southern hemisphere version of the D
ragonfly Telephoto Array (http://www.google.com/url?q=http%3A%2F%2Fdunlap.u
toronto.ca%2Finstrumentation%2Fdragonfly%2F&sa=D&sntz=1&usg=AFQ
jCNFjRpuirW0BxOKDeVCHR7rKONsMtw), which uses off-the-shelf Canon telephoto
lenses to image extremely diffuse stellar structures. You can follow our Hu
ntsman project on Twitter (https://www.google.com/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitt

cebook.com%2FAstroHuntsman%2F&sa=D&sntz=1&usg=AFQjCNEn7-iON1sib
oWBrMteL1SM_lcxLA).\nThis expanded into space, with my efforts to launch a
similar single lens system into space with the Australian Space Eye (https:
//www.google.com/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Farxiv.org%2Fabs%2F1606.06960&sa=D&
amp;sntz=1&usg=AFQjCNGAIx5MkBndtkmUDQm10WcJcezBKw). We've merged this e
ffort into the SkyHopper Space Telescope mission (https://www.google.com/ur
l?q=https%3A%2F%2Fskyhopper.research.unimelb.edu.au%2F&sa=D&sntz=1&
amp;usg=AFQjCNFpohD5F8vDzlI5ZrAcFfdp2buRDg).\nDr Spitler received a BSc wit
h Honours in Computer Science from the University of California, Santa Cruz
, USA, and a PhD in Astrophysics from Swinburne University, Melbourne, Aust
ralia\nIn 2015, Dr Spitler won the Macquarie University award for Research
Excellence for Early Career Researcher, and was nominated as a finalist for
 a 2015 Eureka Prize
