SUMMARY:Guest Speaker - Recorded Talk
LOCATION:: Green Point Observatory or Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Tonight we will share a recorded video by Professor Matthew Bailes. This is
a Swinburne Commons free lecture.\nEither come to the GPO to see the talk
on the big screen and enjoy member discussion,\nor join in via zoom link se
nt to members via email.\nAs this video is not live Prof Bailes will be una
vailable for questions. Nevertheless, we will poll our participants for com
ments and answers.\nExploring Einstein's Universe with Neutron Stars, Black
Holes and Gravitational Waves (Free Astronomy Public Lectures)Einstein dre
amt of a Universe in which space and time were curved by matter, and how bl
ack holes would represent the ultimate manifestations of his physics, and t
he possibility of a new type of radiation - gravitational waves. Sadly he d
ied before the discovery of black holes and neutron stars, and so he was un
able to witness many of the dramatic experimental confirmations of his theo
ry. In this lecture the Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Gravit
ational Wave Discovery (OzGrav), Professor Matthew Bailes will use Mixed Re
ality Technologies to demonstrate how scientists have used telescopes and g
ravitational wave detectors to explore Einstein's universe, and provide ast
onishing confirmations of his theories using observations of neutron stars
and black holes. Presented 19 October 2021.\nProfessor Matthew Bailes\n\n

ith Neutron Stars, Black Holes and Gravitational Waves (Free Astronomy Publ

ere curved by matter, and how black holes would represent the ultimate mani
festations of his physics, and the possibility of a new type of radiation -
gravitational waves. Sadly he died before the discovery of black holes and

Matthew Bailes will use Mixed Reality Technologies to demonstrate how scien
tists have used telescopes and gravitational wave detectors to explore Eins
tein's universe, and provide astonishing confirmations of his theories usin
g observations of neutron stars and black holes. Presented 19 October 2021.
