Astronauts have long trained for space missions right here on Earth, going back to the Apollo program. Learning to live on Mars, where humans will need to spend extended periods of time on the surface, has been underway at several bases run by the Mars Society. These are spread around the world and include the new Himalayan Outpost for Planetary Exploration (HOPE) in India where members of our Australian team recently provided tech expertise in getting the facility up and running. This talk is about simulating living and working on Mars, as well how far long the journey humanity is to the first “boots on the ground” on the red planet.
