The aim of the SASI 150 challenge is to observe and record 150 objects, including stars, planets, minor planets, deep sky objects and lunar features visible in amateur telescopes from Southern locations mostly used by SASI members (for example Green Point Observatory, Waterfall, Mudgee, etc).

Members may use star hopping or go-to telescopes, or a combination of both, and may use their own telescope, or other members or society telescopes or a combination.

To participate, simply advise the Secretary that you want to start the challenge. To record your progress you will need to either purchase a log book ($5) from the Merchandise Officer or print one out at home (an email with the file can be sent directly to your inbox). It is also available to download from the SASI Facebook page.

When members log the 150 objects they advise the Secretary and submit their completed log book. Once approved by the Committee, the member’s name will be engraved on the SASI 150 Shield (which is on the wall of the Green Point Observatory).

If you feel a little daunted by the 150 target we have also broken down the challenge into bite size pieces.

Interim milestones of 50, 75 and 125 objects provide a more stepped approach to the ultimate 150 goal. The same rules as SASI 150 apply, but with fewer targets required. This can provide an easier path with milestone achievement certificates (bronze, silver and gold) awarded. Each level achieved will be counted towards the SASI 150 award.
